GMO Free Product of the Month – March

Our product of the month is Sue’s Organic Lip Balm. Leslie and I have been having meetings in various locations around the Treasure Valley for over a year now.

One of the places that we have had meetings is Rembrandts Coffee House in Eagle. While I was there for a meeting with Leslie, I noticed a box of Sue’s Organic Lip Balm. I scanned the ingredients and noticed no GMO ingredients (except possibly the Vitamin E depending on the source of the oil). There were no hard to pronounce chemical ingredients and it is locally made so I bought it. Since then I have returned to Rembrandts to buy more!

Finding Organic Sue’s Lip Balm

Since learning about GMOs, I have not only tried to eliminate them from my food pantry, but also from my personal care products like shampoo, cosmetics, laundry detergent and soaps. Whenever possible I buy local. So, I was excited when I found Sue’s balm and although it is not a food product, it fits our criteria for product of the month.

I contacted Sue to ask her some questions about her lip balm, how she got started and to find out where else the product can be purchased. The lip balm is made at her residence in Nampa and it is the only product she makes. Sue told me that she took a class on skin care from an herbalist in McCall. She began experimenting making lip balm. She quickly learned that the key to a nice lip balm was coconut oil because it is a natural anti-microbial and anti-bacterial oil that contains natural SPF protection. Sue infuses calendula flower in organic olive oil for two weeks and she says that provides the healing properties. Sue has found that the lip balm helps clear up irritated lips, cracks on fingers and even infected cuts.

The balm I currently have is Watermelon. It has Organic Coconut oil, Organic olive oil infused with Calendula Flowers, Jojoba oil, Vitamin E Oil, Beeswax and Essential Oils for flavoring.

The lip balms are available in Boise at the Flying M, Newt and Harold’s, M & W Express store on Warm Springs, Roosevelt Market, The Record Exchange, Idaho Mountain Touring, Moxie Java Bistro on Chinden. They are also available at D & B stores in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Ontario and Pendleton. Paul’s Markets carry the lip balm in Boise, Kuna, Nampa and Caldwell. It can also be found at Atkinson Markets in Ketchum, Bellevue and Hailey and Ridley’s in McCall.

Sue does not have a website but you may contact her at
