My name is Jenny Easley, Co-Founder of GMO Free Idaho.
A little more than two years ago, my husband asked me to watch the movie, “Food Inc.” with him. When I saw the title screen I nearly refused to watch…because it said, “You will never look at your dinner the same way again.” After some convincing, I watched and true to the title page, my food world has changed.
“Food Inc.” was the first time I heard the term Genetically Modified Organism. I had no idea what it was and began to do some research as soon as the film was over.
I was floored by what I learned and I felt so betrayed by our government regulating agencies and our food companies that I had to act.
I was a label reader prior to learning about GMOs so I knew that if I did not know GMOs were in our food, other people did not know either. There was something so tragically unfair about that.
Here I am, a mother of four, unknowingly feeding my kids food derived from arguably the biggest change in our food supply in human history and I did not have any legal right to know about it.
In those first few months of research, I knew I had to share what I learned, not just about GMOs but also about how to eliminate them from our diet.
I started by posting online. I went to Facebook pages of food manufacturers and posted information on their threads. I organized with others to email manufacturers in protest to their use of these ingredients. Eventually one of the GMO activist organizations introduced me to Leslie Stoddard, who was on the same path as I was.
Together we launched GMO Free Idaho.
Today, GMO Free Idaho is staying committed to our goal of educating Idaho consumers and Idaho farmers about GMOs. And educating consumers on how find and eat non-gmo foods.
We continue to believe that no elected official, no regulating agency, no food manufacturer and no grower should ever be able to determine what we get to know about our food and how it has been produced.
We continue to believe that you have a right to know what you are putting into your body and into your children’s bodies.
It has been a long two years and the cause has kept us busy. But, our numbers are growing and we are seeing successes all around us. We believe we can win the right to know. Your right and my right to GMO Labeling. Your right to be GMO Free.
Join us and make your voice heard,
Jenny Easly, Co-founder
